PART 3: Animation technique

As mentioned in Animation is like a car animation technique is very important yet I believe it is not something that you should focus on too much. It might be weird to hear that but I truly believe this is the case.

12 Animation principles

Animation technique is really nothing else than animation principles. All of you should be fairly familiar with the „basic“ 12 principles of animation that Disney introduced:

1. Squash and stretch
2. Anticipation
3. Staging
4. Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
6. Slow In and Slow Out
7. Arc
8. Secondary Action
9. Timing
10. Exaggeration
11. Solid drawing
12. Appeal

If you are not familiar with them, then you should definitely check them out as they are very important to learn.

I personally came up with a few more concepts/ideas. Some of them go along these 12 principles but some of them are rather unique. I will post more detailed articles about each of these in the future.

If you are a beginner and want me to give you a step by step guide on how to start learning animation technique, I personally would go like this:

1. read Animators Survival kit and Drawn to life

2. animate

3. animate

4. animate

5. animate

6. animate

7. animate

8. animate

9. animate

10. animate

If you don’t have the resources to buy these 3 life saving books then you should gather the resources first and then when you have them buy these 3 books. I mean it. Would you fly a plane without reading the manual? No. So get the books!

If you simply CAN’T get the resources then I’d advise you to check out Tony Robbins or Jaret Grossman and watch their free videos, they should be able to help.
